Forever Young Music Competition, conceived by Frank Resnik, is a unique ‘Over Forties’ amateur music competition and is a project aimed at showcasing the more mature amateur musician who does not necessarily have the opportunity to play live but has a passion for music and would like a musical challenge.

Most people, at some stage of their youth, learn to play a musical instrument. Many of them become very competent musicians but once they start working and ‘life catches up with them’, their instrument goes into the cupboard and stays there, not forgotten, but also not played.

Once we get into our 40’s and beyond, the urgency of building a career has often diminished and even though we would like to start playing music again, a little incentive is what is sometimes needed to get one to open the cupboard door and start practicing again.

Having put feelers out and receiving extremely positive feedback, and having hosted a few amateur music evenings at Marika’s Restaurant, it became apparent that there is a wealth of talent sitting at home, never being heard by anyone other than a few friends and family.
With the staging of Forever young Music Competition 2012 at Ferryman’s Tavern in 2012, 2013 and 2014, we changed that. The competition played to full houses throughout its run and ended with a charity awards dinner.

This year we have changed the venue to City Varsity in Roeland Street, Cape Town. City Varsity is very easily accessible, with the My City buses running in close proximity, and free on and off street parking.

Forever Young Music Competition 2015 will run between 6:30pm every Thursday from 28th July 2016 until mid October 2016.

Once again we will take this opportunity to give something back, by supporting NONCEBA, a family centre based in Khayelitsha. ( We do this by asking audiences and participants to donate unwanted clothes/blankets etc and by giving them  a portion of the ticket price to the charity awards dinner held at the end of the competition, as well as R10 from each entrance fee to the venue charged during the competition.

The format of the competition for 2016 is outlined below.

  • Participants must be 40 years or older (must have turned 40 on or before 28th July 2016)
  • In the interest of fairness, participants may not be professional musicians and may not have received their main source of income making music, or from other music related services rendered to the music industry, within the past five years. (Music teachers, Sound engineers, professional Composers and Songwriters etc do not qualify). Semi-pro musicians who have in the past five years or are currently working more than four times a month on a regular basis also do not qualify.
  • A R150 registration fee per person will be levied. This fee entitles registered contestants free access to the venue on competition nights. Each contestant will also receive a Photo ID, which must be presented at the door on entry
  • Entry to the venue will cost R85 for non-contestants, of which R10 will be donated to NONCEBA and for which they will receive a R75 ‘The Palate’ voucher. This voucher will entitle the audience member to a R75 discount off their food/drinks bill on departure. Vouchers are date specific and must be redeemed on the Day. Vouchers may not be exchanged for cash and no cash change or refunds will be given
